Sorry to all my supporters, but I'm no longer standing for Whanganui District Council.
I’ve got the opportunity to take up the job of a lifetime as Financial Controller for a private equity firm in Singapore, specialising in humanitarian project financing. The firm is awaiting confirmation of funding before it launches fully, so there is still risk for me until that happens.
However, in no way can I put my name forward for re-election to Council in that once you submit your name you cannot pull out before the October election unless you are incapacitated by serious illness or injury and the electoral officer needs to be fully satisfied. Also, if elected and I then depart for Singapore, a bi-election would almost certainly have to be held at a cost of $30,000-$40,000, which I do not want the city to have to undergo.
I’m reluctant to leave at this time when I believe that the city is turning for the better, but the fact is that I’ve now turned 60, I have a young daughter to support and I cannot in all honesty sustain myself on a base income of $31,000 from Council on which I’m heavily reliant. It’s fine to be of service to the city, but I now need to look after me and the opportunity now before me cannot be ignored.
Thanks to those who have helped me, the friends I have made including those amongst iwi who will without a doubt and they must play a key role in the city’s and region’s future. Sorry for leaving so soon, but I have to.
